To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAGLAND MOMAND, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to gas-burners, and especially to that class of burners which are adapted for use in connection with mantles of incandescing metals.
As is well known the type of gas-burner here referred to consists of a mantle of reticulated metal, which when heated glows with brilliant incandescence. For the most effi cient and economical utilization ofsuch gas burners it is necessary that the gas should be carefully mixed with a predetermined quantity of air to establish perfect combustion of the gas with the characteristic Bunsen flame. WVit-h the present construction this is imp0ssible by reason of the fact that the gas-supplypassages remain constant throughout all the variations in pressure. In these old constructions, therefore, the proper admixture of the gas and air is obtained by varying the size of the openings to the atmosphere. This of course varies the intensity of the heat resulting from the consumption of the mixed gases, which often results injuriously to the fragile mantle, causing premature disintegration.
By the present invention I provide means for readily controlling the amount of gas supplied and for varying the flow of gas per unit of time corresponding to the gas-pressure obtained.
In the drawings I have illustrated a construction embodying my invention,in which Figure 1 is an elevation view. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section, and Fig. 3 is a plan view.
Like numerals of reference refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 represents an internally-threaded nipple adapted to be screwed on the gas-fixture to which the burner is to be applied. This nipple is provided at its upper portion with converging sides 2, having a central circular opening 3. The nipple 2 is also externally threaded, so
as to receive a coupling 4. This coupling is internally threaded and is adapted to receive the tube 5, which conveys the mixed air and gas to the point of consumption. Situated in the lower portion of this tube, below the air-opening 6, is a gas-supply disk 7. This supply-disk is provided at its central portion with a conical or semispherical projection 8, extending downwardly into the opening 3, formed in the nipple 1. Several gas-supply holes 9 are providedin the disk 7 at uniform distance from each other, through which holes the gas issues from the gas-chamber 10, between the outerconverging walls of the nipple 3 and the under surface of the disk 7. This insures that the gas passing through the disk rises in uniformly-spaced columns separated from each other, so that the best result of the admixture of gas and air is secured. The holes 9 are bored to admit a given quantity of gas per unit of time at a given. pressure. below the point contemplated, the supply may beregulated by simply screwing the tube 5,
with the disk carried therein, into or out of the coupling 4, thus increasing or decreasing the space between the projection 8 and the converging walls 2, and consequently varying the size of the gas-passage.
What is claimedas new is- The combination of a nipple provided with converging walls terminating in an opening, a gas-mixing tube, a disk provided with a plurality of apertures, a gas-chamber between the under surface of the disk and the outer surface of the converging wallsof the nipple, a projection on said disk adaptedto enter the opening in the nipple, and a coupling for connecting the mixing-tube with the nipple, substantially as specified.
