Incandescent gas lamps. -A refractory solid body, preferably of fireclay, steatite, magnesian clay, or asbestos, or a mixture of these materials, is arranged in the mantle of an upright ot inverted burner. In upright burners, the solid corresponds in shape more or less to the mantle, is not considerably smaller than it, and is arranged so as not to close the opening in the top of the mantle. Fig. 1 shows one form in which the solid body a is somewhat tapered, and has a rounded base with a projection for fitting the usual burner head socket and with a grooved or forked projection for carrying the mantle. Fig. 3 shows an inverted lamp in which a pear-shaped solid body a is formed with a hook for suspending it from a cross-bar d within the burner tube e, the mantle holder f being adjustably screwed on the burner tube. According to the Provisional Specification, the solid body may be carried by a wire bent round an inverted burner tube, or it may be attached to or formed in one with the mantle holder.
