Abstract

26,895. Imray, O., [Stirling Co.]. Dec. 8. Water-tube boilers; superheaters, steam.-A superheater, which may be flooded so as to serve as an auxiliary boiler, is combined with a water-tube boiler of the Stirling type. Between two banks of water tubes, which are connected to water and steam drums 2, 3, and to a mud drum 4, is fixed a bank of superheating-tubes 11, which is connected to an upper drum 12 and a lower drum 10. Baffles 8, 19 cause the products of combustion to pass up among the water tubes 6, down among the superheating-tubes 11, and up among the water tubes 5 to the outlet 20. The drum 12 is divided by a transverse partition, so that steam entering one chamber, so formed, by the tubes 15, 14, leading from the drums 2, 3, is compelled to circulate through the tubes 11 and drum 10 on its way to the other chamber of the drum 12, in which a steam outlet 17 is fitted. Circulation in the water tubes 5, 6, and drums 2, 3, 4, may be facilitated by connecting the drums 2, 3 directly by pipes 18. To regulate the amount of superheat, and to flood the superheater, the mud drum 4 is connected to the drum 10 by an external valved pipe 23, which extends as a spray pipe 24 into the lower part of the drum 10.
