Abstract

4653. Cowan, J. March 6. Superheaters, steam; water-tube boilers; watercirculation, promoting.-Consists of an independently-fired steam superheater which with its protecting-screen of steam-generating tubes appears exteriorly as a five-drum type of Stirling boiler. Steam from a battery of boilers enters the upper drum a, and, after passing to the lower drum c and to the upper drum b through banks of tubes d, e, escapes by the outlet n. The protecting steam generator consists of the tubes g which connect the drums i, h. The steam generated passes by the pipe k to the superheating-drum a. To ensure a downward circulation of the water, tubes of the series g are embedded in the furnace settings. A valve-controlled pipe s connects the drum c with the water space of the drum h so that the superheater may be flooded when desired. The flap valve o situated in the steam pipe m is connected to the furnace damper p in order that the steam entering the superheater may control the position of the damper. In some cases, the single lower steam drum of the superheater may be replaced by two drums in direct communication with each other, a branch of superheating-tubes being connected to each of these drums.
