Abstract

23,294. Brown, J. R. Oct. 27. Superheaters, steam.-A superheater, in which a circulation may be maintained when it is flooded so as to form a part of the water-heating system of the boiler, is so arranged that steam may pass direct from the steam and water drum to the steam main or through the superheater. In the path of the furnace gases, in a sectional and water-tube boiler of the type shown in Fig. 1, is placed a superheating arrangement. consisting, preferably of longitudinal boxes built in dead air spaces in the side walls, and connected by a series of U-shaped pipes, which extend transversely across the boiler. Steam from the drums 2 passes through pipes 15 to the upper box 10, and through the upper set of pipes 9 to the longer intermediate box 11 ; thence it passes by the lower set of pipes 9 to the lower box 12, which is shifted longitudinally relatively to the upper box. The lower box communicates with a pipe 14, which is connected to the main steam pipe, preferably at a point above the main control valve 28, and may be provided with a valve 29, as shown in Fig. 4. The upper box 10 is connected to any part of the drum below the water line by a pipe 22, having a valve 23. The lower box 12 is also connected to the mud drum 18 by a pipe 19, having a valve 20 and a bye-pass 24. To flood the superheater, the valves 20, 23 are opened, allowing water to circulate from the mud drum 18 through the superheater to the steam and water drum 2, and back to the mud drum through the tubes 26. To blow off the superheater and remove sediment therefrom, the valve 20 is closed and the valve 25 in the bye-pass 24 opened. If the valve 23 be closed durmg the blowing off, the superheater is drained. The character of the steam delivered by the main steam pipe is controlled by the valves 29, 28.
