Fire-tubes with superheating - jackets; damp e r s f o r controlling superheaters. - The. main steam - pipe of a boiler is lowered into the water-space and is traversed for the whole of its length by smoketubes expanded into the fire-box tube-plate and also into the front plate of the header in the smoke-box. In the arrangement shown, a set of steam mains 1 ... 6 extends between headers A, B below the water-level. Steam is supplied from the dome 13 to the header A by pipes 12, and passes to the cylinders through the regulator 14 and pipes 15. Each steam main contains a set of seven fire-tubes opening into the fire-box and into the smoke-box. The passage of the furnace gases through these tubes is controlled by a damper 21 moved in consonance with the regulator valve. Easily removable deflectors 18, 19 are arranged in the headers A, B, the deflector 18 serving to throw any water against the tubeplate 8, while the deflector 19 prevents water from being carried to the regulator. The mains are slightly inclined towards the smoke-box so that any water thrown down by the deflector 19 flows towards the tube-plate 8. The mains may be fitted with baffles. Modifications are described in which some of the mains are open at both ends to the steam space, or in which the mains are arranged in series.
