Abstract

4647. Marshall, H. J. Feb. 24. Sinuous-tube superheaters; dampers &c. for controlling superheaters. - A locomotive or similar tubular boiler is provided with a superheater fitted in the smoke-box and having a chambered ring-header in which adjacent chambers are connected by U-tubes; the lowest chamber is connected to the outlet chamber by double U-tubes. Saturated steam passes by a pipe A to the top chamber in the header B and then through the successive chambers by the U- tubes D to the chamber E, which is connected to the chamber G by the tubes F. A by-pass valve J' connects the pipes A, J leading to and from the superheater. The tubes F are contained in a cylindrical chamber K in front of the smoke-tubes. An opening L and baffles N cause the gases to pass among the U-tubes. A damper M is provided to allow the hot gases to pass direct to the chimney when raising steam.
