Superheaters, steam.-In superheaters which are formed as forward extensions of boilers of the locomotive and multitubular type, a second or supplemental chamber D is formed by the end plate of the boiler and a depending plate within the superheater. Between the rows of boiler tubes Y, baffle-plates C are arranged in the main chamber A in such a manner as to cause the steam to flow-along the tubes alternately with and against the flow of hot gases through the tubes. The main chamber is connected preferably at its upper part with the steam space of the boiler, the superheated steam passing away from the supplemental chamber by the pipe E. Saturated steam may be admitted by the pipe F to vary the degree of superheating. The superheater, when not in use as such, may be flooded with water from the boiler, in which case it then forms part of the boiler. There may be combined with the superheater a steam drier which takes the place of the supply pipe B, the drier being constructed of a pair of boxes connected by looped tubes.
