Steam separators; superheaters, steam.-Steam separators are fitted in combination with a heater, which is adapted to vaporize the separated water and return the steam thus generated to the main steam-pipe. The invention is intended chiefly for locomotives. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, each of the two branches b of the main steam-pipe a leads to a separator consisting of a wall e with perforations c. Below the separator is the heater, which is composed of U-tubes k passing into some of the fire-tubes and connecting the compartments g, i of a header h. The compartment i delivers the steam generated in the heater to the pipe f leading to the corresponding cylinder. When little or no water is being separated, the heater serves as a steam superheater. Holes m in the header h permit the insertion of a brush &c. for cleaning the fire-tubes. The tubes k instead of being led into the fire-tubes may pass across or around the smoke-box. In Fig. 4, the heater is shown consisting of two sets of tubes n connected in series. The pipe f is, in this case, replaced by small tubes connected at the ends to headers. Fig. 5<a> shows another arrangement in which the separator is composed of tubes 5 projecting into the enlarged upper ends of the tubes 3 of the heater. Holes c allow a small quantity of steam to pass directly to the outlet chamber 6. Fig. 6 shows the application to a marine boiler. The inlet and outlet sides of the separator are fitted with stopvalves u. v. A heater constructed as described in Specification No. 26,175, A.D. 1906, may be employed.
