Catches, automatic; catches yielding to pull or pressure; striking-plates.-A spring catch-device applicable for holding doors open or closed or for securing the hoods of motor-cars comprises a rigid angular member 15 upon the one part A to be secured, and on the other part B a device formed of springy material, and comprising an attachment portion 19, an inclined arm 23, and a substantially horizontal arm, these two arms respectively, carrying rollers 25, 22 in overlapping relation as shown in Fig. 3. On bringing the parts A, B, together, the member 15 presses back the roller 25, and takes up the position shown in Fig. 2. The catch is released by raising the arm 20, which can be effected by a thumb-piece 26, or by a cord or a sliding rod, or by pivoted bars operable from both sides of the door. The springy resistance of the roller 25 produces a buffer action upon closing the door, and also assists in starting the opening movement. It may be increased by an additional spring extending across the spring frame. In its application to securing motor-car hoods, Fig. 11, a pair of catches are arranged within a channel bar 39, and are released from engagement with the hooks 15 by a piece 41 connected to a flexible strip 40, which pulls away the arms 20 of the respective devices.
