Regenerators.-In a regenerator of the kind in which rows of horizontal waste gas flues are surrounded by top or bottom and lateral air flues, partitions b, Figs. 1 and 2, are arranged at the angles of the waste gas flues a and provided at the ends with gaps so that the air entering at I passes in sequence through the bottom or top flues c and lateral flues d. Direct connection of the lateral flues with one another is prevented by stop plates t, m. Waste gases entering at i pass through the flues a and the connecting-flues. which are provided with wedge-shaped bricks k adapted to be readily removed for repairs and which ensure the smooth flow of the gases at their turning points. The flues may be provided internally with blocks n to increase the speed of the gases and to improve the transfer of heat. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which the partitions consist of two longitudinal plates b<1>, b<2> separating the air flues c and a cover-plate o separating the lateral flues d. Plates p, g, Figs. 6 and 7, are provided at the points where the top or bottom and lateral flues communicate to ensure the proper sequence in the flow of the air through the flues. In the modification shown in Fig. 9, the waste-gas flues are formed by lateral plates a<2> attached by tongue-and-groove joints to top and bottom plates a<1>, which are provided with ledges at b<3> to form the partitions between the air flues. The partitions are cut away as shown to form connections between the flues c, d. Several of the top or bottom flues and the lateral flues may be grouped together in parallel and where necessary the top or bottom flues and lateral flues may communicate, as shown in Fig. 11, by providing the necessary gaps in the ledges b<3>. Fig. 12 shows the manner in which the lateral flues only arc arranged to comunicate with one another. The ledges b<3> of the top and bottom plates a' may be bevelled, as shown in Fig. 13, to facilitate fitting, or may be provided on the top or bottom plates only instead of on both.
