Bricks, special shapes of.-in chequer work for regenerators formed of bricks provided with vertical passes, the passages are restricted by baffles formed by separate plates, discs of the like or projections formed integrally with the bricks. The plates 6 may be arranged diagonally as shown in Fig. 4 or transversely as shown in Fig. 8 and may be provided with curved faces 10 or curved ribs 11 to give the gases a whirling motion. Apertured plates 7 may be arranged between adjacent bricks, as shown in Fig. 6, or projections 9, Fig. 7, may be formed integrally with the bricks.
