Bricks, special shapes of.-Refractory bricks for forming chequer-work of furnace regenerators and carburetting and superheating chambers of carburetted water-gas plant are formed with double inclined or rounded upper portions 1, Fig. 4, separated by bearing-surfaces 2, and with double inclined or rounded lower portions 3 separated by recesses. The bricks are built up in the form of cross rows, as shown in Fig. 2, so that they interlock and the rows of bricks in any layer are staggered in relation to the next parallel rows of bricks above or below. The inclined portions of the bricks are practically in the same plane as the inclined portions of the bricks in the rows above and below, so that the speed of the gases in passing through the chequer-work is practically constant. Fig. 10 shows a modified form of brick in which the inclined or rounded parts 1 project above the bearing-surfaces 2 and act as distance-pieces. The angles made by the projecting parts 3, Fig. 5, with the under surface of the brick may be rounded; also the angles between the parts 1 and the parts 2, Fig. 10, may be rounded and made to engage with the corresponding rounded surfaces of adjacent bricks.
