Abstract

1738. Grove, H. E., and Barker, F. G. Feb. 3. Tiles, special shapes of.-A continuous regenerator for gaseous-fuel retort furnaces is built up of refractory tiles of special shape arranged to form baffled passages for air and combustion products adjacent one another, the tiles being so shaped and arranged that leakage between the air and gas passages is prevented. Figs. 1 and 2 show two views of a tile, and Fig. 5 shows the manner of arranging the tiles to form the regenerator. Each tile a is provided with an overhanging portion b, which abuts against a corresponding portion on another tile to form the floor and roof of two superposed passages. Recesses c are provided to receive the lower ends of the superposed tiles, and recesses j and projections i in the edges of the tiles engage with corresponding projections and recesses in adjacent tiles. Ribs d are provided on the faces of the tiles, and the inner top edge of each tile is splayed to form a channel g between adjacent tiles to receive a filling of fire-clay, putty, &c. To prevent leakage through the side joints, the joints of one vertical row of passages are stepped down below the joints of an adjacent row, as shown at k, Fig. 5.
