Abstract

355,674. Hot-blast stoves & c. BRASSERT & CO., Ltd., H. A., Brook House, Walbrook, London.-(Brassert & Co., H. A. ; 310, South Michigan Avenue, Chicago, U.S.A.) March 19, 1930, No. 8875. [Class 51 (i).] A checkerwork construction for hot blast stoves and the like comprises passages extending uninterruptedly through the checkerwork which are progressively reduced in cross sectional area from the ends at which the heating gases enter to the outlet ends for the regulation of the velocity of the gases passing therethrough. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the checkerwork is formed of tubular octagonal bricks 16 having long and short sides arranged alternately, the short sides of the bricks being placed in contact to form rectangular passages 17. Some of the bricks are provided with notches in the lower ends to receive a supporting bar. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which loose filler bricks 19, 21 are arranged in the passages 11, 17 such filler bricks being arranged in angular relation in different sections of the checkerwork. In a further modification, the long sides of the octagonal bricks are curved to project into the rectangular passages between the bricks while the internal passages of the bricks are corrugated. Various forms of filler bricks are described and illustrated having different dimensions throughout the height of the checkerwork. In the modification shown in Fig. 20, the octagonal bricks 65 are provided with rectangular passages 66 identical with passages 67 formed between adjacent bricks. Some or all of the bricks are provided with notches 71 to form communications between the passages 66, 67. The upper sections of checkerwork are without filler bricks but the lower sections have filler bricks such as 74 varying in form to provide passageways of progressively reduced area. The supporting structure for the bricks 65 and filler bricks 74 comprises bricks 84 and metal members 78, Figs. 22, 25, the members 78 being provided with a seating 83 for the filler bricks so that the filler bricks break joint with the main bricks. In a further modification the checkerwork is built up of the usual rectangular bricks to provide passages containing filler bricks of varying dimensions throughout the height thereof.
