Abstract

Regenerators.-In a regenerative steam-boiler furnace, the regenerator is constructed mainly of material such as chamotte, bricks, concrete, natural or artificial stone, or the like, and its heating-surface is a,t least three and a half times as great as the heating-surface of the boiler. Fig. 1 shows a water-tube boiler with a regenerator 24 provided with vertical conduits constructed of brickwork. The furnace gases pass through the conduits of the regenerator to the main flue 33, and air entering at 26 flows through the spaces between the adjacent conduits to the conduits 27 leading to the furnace. Fig. 3 shows an internally-fired boiler with the regenerator arranged beneath. The gases from the furnace are led through tubular passages 44<a> and 44b in the upper and lower parts of the regenerator and finally pass to the main flue 53. Air for combustion is heated by passing through horizontal transverse passages arranged between the passages 44<a> and 44<b>. In both of the arrangements described above, the furnace gases may be led direct to the main flue.
