Commutator switching-arrangements.-In a high-voltage rectifier comprising conducting arcs 15, 16 rotating relatively to other electrodes 11 - - 14, the arcs and electrodes are made in the form of shells, the radii of curvature at all points of which are sufficient to prevent the formation of corona except when a spark passes between the arcs and the electrodes. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the arcs 15, 16 are carried by an insulating-disc 21 mounted on a shaft 19 driven by a synchronous motor, and the electrodes 11, 13 are connected to the secondary terminals of a transformer 6 energized from the source of supply 1. The leads to and from the rectifier may also have radii of curvature sufficient to prevent the formation of corona. The invention permits the use of arcs of greater length than those usually employed, with the consequent rectification of a larger proportion of the current wave. In order to improve the insulation of the device, the arcs may be placed in different planes, two sets of electrodes 11 - - 14 connected together being employed. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4, the arcs and two sets of electrodes are placed on opposite sides of the driving-motor 28, and brush contacts 29 are provided on the electrodes.
