Homopolar or acyclic machines; motorgenerators.-In a homopolar generator for the electrical working of metals having the windings described in the parent Specification, the rotor is insulated from the earth, and the current is collected both at the periphery of the rotor and at the end of the rotor at or near its axis. The rotor 1 is insulated from the driving motor at 17 and insulation 18 is provided between the stator 5 and the bearing brackets 19. A single set of brushes 4 bears against the periphery of the rotor, or against a copper slip-ring thereon, and a high-speed friction saw 22 is mounted directly upon the spindle. The brushes 4 are electrically connected with a projection 20 on the stator which is earthed at 14a. The current path follows the dotted line B and is completed through the circular saw 22 and the work 15<a> which is earthed at 23. The projection 20 to which the brushes are connected may be insulated from the stator, in which case the insulating layers 18 may be omitted. A connecting cable 24 may replace the earth connections 14a, 23.
