Abstract

13,750. Mordey, W. M. Sept. 27. Relays, non-circuit - closing.--A dynamo - electric relay for amplifying small currents is constructed as a direct-current dynamo with a commutator having a large number of parts, the iron being of such mass as to be worked at a very low magnetic induction (for example B=50), and the field and armature conductors being of very low resistance and of large cross-section for the currents they carry, whereby the proportion of energy wasted in the machine is very small. The dynamo may have a laminated field, a very small air-gap, and a toothed armature from which current is collected by a commutator or by brushes bearing directly on the armature conductors. The exciting- winding is wholly or partly a distributed or face winding a wholly or partly surrounding the armature. The armature reaction is neutralized by a winding i surrounding the armature between the brush diameter and a diameter at right-angles thereto. The strength of the relayed currents may be regulated by varying the speed of rotation of the armature. A magnetic shunt as described in Specification 1434/99 may be used to eliminate slow irregular currents. Two or more relays may be connected in cascade, the armature of one being connected to the field of the next.
