9858. Jacoby, H. C. E. April 27. Armatures; sparking, perventing. -In alternating-current commutator motors having two or more distinct rotor windings connected to alternate bars of the commutator, brushes a, a<1>, Figs. 1 and 2, of like polarity are joined by resistances, impedances, or stator coils b, b<1> with the object of reducing short-circuit currents. The Figures show a four-pole repulsion motor having the rotor windings connected to the commutator so that, when one brush a bears on a segment connected to one winding, the other brush a connected therewith bears on a segment connected to the other winding, no coil being therefore short-circuited by a single brush. The middle points of the coils b, b<1> are joined as shown. The coils b, b<1> when wound on the stator are placed so as to have induced therein opposing electromotive forces equal to and co-phasal with those induced in the coils undergoing commutation.
