Abstract

344,905. Commutator switching- arrangements. EATON, W. S., 3323, Hollydale Drive, Los Angeles, U.S.A. Nov. 28, 1929, No. 36520. Convention date, Nov. 28, 1928. [Class 38 (ii).] In a rotary commutator for use in rectifying alternating current, sparking at the brushes is avoided by the provision of auxiliary segments 26 connected to the main conducting segments 25 through resistance 29 so that instead of the circuit being broken during rotation of the commutator, resistance is gradually introduced into the circuit. Fig. 6 shows an arrangement for rectifying alternating current comprising two pairs of segmental rings 51a, 51b, 52a, 52b associated with brushes 60a, 60b, 61a, 61b connected to an A.C. supply 62, the rings being connected to slip rings 53, 54 from which a direct current is taken off. Figs. 3 and 4 show the method of embodying the resistance winding 42 in the commutator beneath the segments 17, the latter being secured in place on an insulating ring 43 by metal stirrups 44 which serve as connections to the resistance winding.
