Alternating-current commutator machines.- The exciting winding of a compensated alternating-current machine consists of an open-coil commutator winding of drum or ring type arranged on the primary member of the machine. In the case of a drum-wound machine the winding may have a shortened pitch. Fig. 1 shows a two-pole ring winding a the open coils of which are connected together at a central point and to a commutator having brushes b<1> - - b<3> joined to the motor secondary winding c and starting resistances e. For better utilization of the armature, the brushes may be made to cover a greater number of segments, or, as shown in Fig. 2, the number of phases in the commutator winding may be increased to six, six brushes being used for each pair of poles, connected as shown.
