[Class 38 (ii).] Commutator switching-arrangements.-A rotary commutator mounted on the shaft of a synchronous motor a supplied from the same source as the current to be rectified comprises conducting segments d . . g spaced apart by nonconducting segments which may be formed by a plurality of small separately insulated segments h. The conducting segments may also be divided into smaller segments, the last of which in each case may be connected to the adjacent segment h through a spark-eliminating resistance n. Two pairs of brushes o, p and q, r are employed connected respectively to the A.C. source (which may be a transformer T energized from a three-phase supply) and to the load terminals x, y. Where the supply source is single-phase, a single-phase motor equipped with a starting winding adapted to be cut out by a centrifugal switch on the armature shaft is employed.
