Abstract
208,268. Mawdsley, J. H. St. H. Sept. 29, 1922. Exciting.-A dynamo 1, Fig. 1, for electric welding supplies continuous current to the electrodes 3, 4 and, by means of slip-rings 2, it also supplies alternating current to the electrodes through a transformer 5 until the arc is struck. The welding current is steadied by a reactance 7, which may be in two parts a, b, the part b being short-circuited by the switch 6 when this switch is opened to disconnect the alternating supply after the arc has been struck. In the form shown in Fig 2, the commutator of the machine 1 excites a continuous-current machine 9 which is connected to the electrodes, to which the sliprings are also connected directly. A transformer may alternatively be used in the alternating- current circuit as in Fig. 1. When a number of electrodes is used, each set of electrodes has a set of reactances and automatic switches.
