470,429. Converting. JONES, R. J. ELSOME-. Feb. 26, 1936, No. 5749. [Class 38 (ii)] An arrangement for obtaining high voltage current for supplying for example a neon tube 29 from a low voltage source such as a car battery 5 comprises a transformer 1, the primary circuit of which includes an interrupter 6 actuated by a motor comprising a rotor 15 disposed between polepieces 14 projecting from the core 12 of the transformer. The interrupter may comprise cam-actuated contacts or, as shown, may be a rotary commutator co-operating with a brush 7, slip-ring 9 and brush 8. The brush 7 is mounted on an arm 40 and is adjusted angularly so that polepieces 27 on the rotor receive impulses when the primary circuit is completed which maintain rotation. To ensure self-starting an auxiliary coil which is momentarily energized through an additional contact on a starting switch may be provided to bring the polepieces 27 into starting position. Auxiliary high resistance brushes such as 37 may be associated with the main brush 7. The transformer primary may be centre-tapped and its ends brought to slip-rings co-operating with two sets of segments on the commutator so that symmetrical A.C. may be produced in the secondary. A second transformer feeding a separate load circuit may be associated electrically with the combined transformer and interrupter.
