[Class 39 (iii)] In electric welding devices of the type comprising a supplementary electrode placed near the main electrode to start the are the two electrodes are formed as two parts of a single electrode structure. This may be done by forming the supplementary electrodes as an insulated conductor coiled round the main electrode. The supplementary electrode current is preferably of higher voltage and less amperage than the main current, and may be only momentary. Circuits are described in which (a) the currents from the two electrodes are taken from tappings of a transformer, (b) the main electrode is connected to the primary of a transformer and the supplementary to the secondary thereof, (c) the supplementary electrode is connected to an oscillatory circuit. In the two latter cases the supplementary current is started when the main electrode is moved to start the arc.
