172,316. Gauthier, G. H. Morin-. Dec. 2,1920, [Convention date]. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Axles and axle structures.-Change-speed gearing is enclosed in the rear-axle casing with the bevel pinion 17, which drives the bevel wheel 22 on the axle, situated behind the centre of the axle. One road wheel only may be driven, this wheel being fixed on the axle 21. The axle casing comprises two main parts 1, 2 together with a cover 4, the countershaft 3 of the gearing having its axis in the plane a-b of the joint of the cover with the other parts. In a modification, the other road wheel is also driven from the bevel wheel 22 through spur gearing and a countershaft arranged below the longitudinal shaft 16.
