Abstract

179,685. Churchill, J. R. Feb. 17, 1921. Balance or differential gearing; transmission gear of invariable ratio. -Comprises differential gear 7 and reducing gearing 14 mounted on a through countershaft or axle 4 and enclosed in a short casing 18 which is provided with a pad or face for attachment to (a) the main vehicle springs in cases where the gear is on the axle, or (b) the chassis where the gear is on a countershaft. The engine and propeller shaft driving the gearing are in a line askew in plan to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle. The differential casing 10 is carried in bearings 11 in the casing 18 adjusted by screwed sleeves 12. One spring pad is provided on the casing 18 and another 22 on a block 21 having bearings in which the through shaft or axle 4 rotates. One road wheel or driving-pulley &c. is fixed on the axle 4 and the other 9 on a sleeve 8 carrying one of the sun-wheels of the differential gear. Where double-reduction gear is required, the bevel or worm gear train 14 may drive a spur gear train on the differential casing.
