Axles and axle structures.-In vehicles in which the road wheels are driven through separate shafts k, m, enclosed in thrust casings connected to the chassis by a ball- and-socket joint o, the differential gear is placed at the centre of the ball-and-socket joint. The fixed part n of the joint is formed with slots n<1> to allow the axle to which the thrust casings are fixed to rock in a vertical transverse plane. The shafts k, m may be divergent as shown, or may be parallel.
