[Class 80 (ii)] A differential or balance gear for vehicles comprises a spur wheel pair 41, 42 inclined to the plane of rotation of the gear casing 40 to such an extent (about 20‹-35‹) that the vehicle part-axles 50, 50<1> can be turned relatively to one another through Hooke's joints 46, 47, only with a speed-ratio which is necessarily non-uniform to a substantial degree. This introduces an obstacle to the free spinning of a road wheel which meets no resistance, and therefore self-locks the differential.
