Abstract
171,771. Mercantile Engineers & Founders, Ltd., and Anderson, J. Aug. 20,1920. Driving-arrangements for screw propellers.-Comprises a forward and reverse gear box for motor-boats driven by internal-combustion engines in which the layshaft of the gear-box forms a continuation of the engine cam-shaft and in which four gear-wheels are provided. The camshaft e is driven by gears m, n from the engine shaft c, and has a sprocket p which is connected by a chain r with a sprocket q freely mounted on the propeller shaft u. For forward driving, the portion w of a double clutch, which is slidably mounted on but keyed to the shaft u, is slidden into engagement with the element s, and so directly coupling the shafts. For reversing driving, the portion v of the clutch is slidden into engagement with the element t on the sprocket q, the drive thus passing from the shaft c through the gears m, n, sprockets p, q, and chain r, to the shaft u. The clutch members may be of the expanding, plate, or disc types. The thrust collar 7 takes against the thrust-block z or the boss 8.
