Abstract

686,634. Variable-speed gearing. SUBERKRUB, F. Jan. 3, 1951, No. 278/51. Class 80 (ii). [Also in Group XXVII] In variable-speed gearing for the propeller shaft of a ship driven by a number of internal combustion engines, the crank shafts are permanently geared together while running to ensure uniform ignition timing. In a reversing gear, Fig. 2, two motors 1 are connected through flange or claw couplings 3 to shafts 2 carrying pinions 8 which are permanently intergeared through pinions 10 and a gear 11, and the latter gear may be connected to the propeller shaft 7 by a friction clutch B to give reverse motion. For forward motion clutch B is disengaged and pinions 5 are clutched to shafts 2 to drive a gear 6 secured to the shaft 7. In gearing giving two forward speeds and reverse, Fig. 4, the two shafts 2 are intergeared through pinions 12 and a gear 13, and the latter may be clutched to the shaft 7 to give one forward speed. The second forward speed is obtained by clutching pinions 14, which engage a gear 15 secured to shaft 7, to the shafts 2. For reverse gear clutches A and D are disengaged and a clutch C is engaged to connect a pinion 18 meshing with the gear 13 to a shaft 16 carrying a pinion 17 which drives the gear 15 through a reversing pinion 19. The arrangement of Fig. 4 may be modified to give three forward speeds by omitting the pinion 19 and allowing the pinion 17 to mesh with the gear 15. Three forward speeds and reverse may be obtained by adding a shaft having two pinions, one fixed and the other clutched thereto, meshing with and interconnecting the gears 13 and 15. Where the power is too great to be transmitted by a clutch on the propeller shaft the gears 8, 12 may be clutched to the shafts 2 and an additional set of gears be provided to synchronise the motor shafts. The clutches may be of the laminar disc type and be housed within the gears.
