Abstract
163,784. McDermid, W. F. Feb. 23, 1920. Filters having sheet filtering-materials. - A petrol filter for use with internal-combustion engines is arranged so that the supply of petrol to the engine is maintained during cleansing of the filter which is brought about by turning a valve handle. A disc 21, Fig. 5, of copper gauze or other filtering-medium is clamped to the end of a cylindrical extension 18 of a cap 16 which is screwed into the top, Fig. 2, of the filter casing. Normally, petrol supplied through the inlet 5, Fig. 2, passes through a port 4 in a valve plug 2' and a vertical passage 7 to the chamber 1, filters upwards through the gauze 21 and passes away through ports in the extension 18, a vertical passage 11 and the outlet 10 to the engine. When the valve is turned, petrol from the inlet 5 passes direct to the outlet 10 and the engine, and a cleansing flow is directed up the passage 11 to. the space above the gauze, impurities being carried down through a port in the valve to an outlet 15.
