Subaqueous audible signals.-In a submarine sound - producer, the diaphragm 2 carries a tuned system of two masses 3, 4 connected by springs 5, 6, and the mass 4 is acted on by a striker 7 operated electrically, pneumatically, hydraulically or mechanically. The diaphragm may be tuned to the system 3, 4, 5, 6, or may be of much lower frequency so as to execute forced vibrations. In the latter case the diaphragm may be stiffened by radial ribs or formed with an annular thickening so as to ensure its vibrating in a definite mode, for example in its fundamental mode or with an annular loop of maximum amplitude.
