Subaqueous audible signals.-Osscillations are communicated to a radiating-member B, such as a diaphragm or part of a ship's hull, by a system of two masses G<1>, G<2> connected by one or more longitudinally vibrating rods or tubes E. The exciting agent may be an alternating-current magnet M, and one or both of the masses G<1>, G<2> may form part of the magnetic system, but mechanical excitation may also be employed. By making the mass G<2> large compared with G<1>, the amplitude of oscillation is greater at the point of excitation than at the diaphragm B. The mass G<2> may be connected direct to the diaphragm B, or may be more or less loosely coupled, for example by means of a transverse spring, or by means of an elastic red K. If it is desired to introduce additional damping, the rod K may be made of some material, such as lead, having large internal friction.
