Abstract

148,412. Signal Ges. June 5, 1917, [Convention date]. Addition to 147,937. Subaqueous audible signals.-In devices for receiving and producing sound, particularly for subaqueous use, having two vibratory systems coupled together so as to interact as described in the parent Specification, one of the two resonant frequencies of the device is more than twice as high as the other. As described, each vibratory system comprises two masses connected by a diaphragm, for which,. however, elastic bodies such as reeds, strings, or springs may be substituted. Masses m, m<1> connected by a diaphragm e<1> form one vibratory system, masses m, m<2> and diaphragm e2 forming the other. m<1> constitutes a casing for the apparatus, and is large compared with the other means. m is common to the two systems, and, as shown, constitutes the armature of an electro-magnet formed by the mass m<2> and coils s. In another form described for reception of sound, the mass m<2> forms part of a microphone. In manufacture, each system is independently tuned to the required frequency, an equivalent mass being used in substitution for the other system. The microphone used may be of single-contact type, having contact between steel and galena.
