148,414. Signal Ges. Feb. 22, 1918, [Convention date]. Addition to 147,937. Subaqueous audible signals.-Apparatus for producing or receiving subaqueous sounds, having two vibratory structures coupled together so as to interact as described in the parent Specification, comprises a diaphragm 1 of uniform thickness so tuned that its fundamental frequency is low compared with that of the co-operating vibratory structure (shown as two masses 3 connected by elastic members 4), the diaphragm in the complete apparatus executing forced vibrations such that the points of maximum amplitude lie on a circle as indicated by dotted lines and of a frequency nearly that of the co-operating structure. The diaphragm may be tuned by adjusting its thickness, but preferably by adjusting its diameter. This is effected by turning a groove a of the required depth in a supporting-ring 2 integral with the diaphragm.
