Audible signals.-Sound-receiving apparatus is neither fully tuned nor rendered aperiodic, but is so far damped that while partly tuned it fails to produce a definite musical tone when struck under water. The receivers may be damped by known means, as for instance by applying large microphones, or generally by causing the indicating-means to abstract a large amount of energy from the vibratory member. The damping factor should amount to 0.3 at the least.
