Abstract

Diaphragms; condenser telephones and other electrostatic instruments.-A vibratory diaphragm is air-damped so that a maximum resistance to a given air movement is imposed at the area or areas of the diaphragm having maximum amplitude of vibration. The diaphragm 11, Fig. 1, of an electrostatic instrument lies between two capacity plates 14, 15 provided with holes, the spacing of which is graduated so that the holes are closer together towards the edge than at the centre. Alternatively, the capacity plates may be perforated uniformly, Fig. 3, and damping plates 17, 18 provided which may be adjusted by nuts 23, 24. The damping action may occur not only at the centre of the diaphragm, but also at a zone nearer the edge, e.g. two thirds of the distance from the centre to the edge to allow for vibrations of the diaphragm as in Fig. 6. This damping may be effected by suitably spacing the perforations in the capacity plates 14, 15, Fig. 7. Specification 246,728 is referred to.
