Abstract

147,937. Signal Ges. Feb. 29, 1916, [Convention date]. Subaqueous audible signals.-The diaphragm p of a subaqueous sound transmitter or receiver is connected to the exciting or detecting device through an intermediate vibratory structure, such as the system n, f , m, which is closely coupled to the diaphragm and may have much smaller damping. The amplitude of vibration at the exciter or detector is thus made large compared with that at the diaphragm. The diaphragm and the intermediate structure may have the same or different individual frequencies, and the system as a whole vibrates with frequencies which lie above and below the individual frequencies, and with dampings which lie between the individual dampings. A second intermediate structure may be introduced, and the system as a whole may have several frequencies of vibration, at any of which the exciter or detector may be worked. The diaphragm may be so shaped, or formed with ribs, or centrally loaded, as to vibrate with maximum amplitude over an annular zone.
