Abstract

148,410. Signal Ges. Sept. 8, 1915, [Convention date]. Addition to 147,936. Subaqueous audible signals.-In apparatus for receiving subaqueous sound vibrations, a diaphragm is used tuned to a frequency lower than that to be received, and, to prevent vibration at the higher frequency with a nodal line or ring, the diaphragm is thickened or strengthened with ribs at the parts where the nodes would otherwise occur, as described in the parent Specification. Fig. 4 shows a diaphragm E strengthened with radial ribs R, leaving unstrengthened zones Za, Zi respectively round the periphery, and near the middle. An oscillating structure tuned to the signalling frequency and carried by the diaphragm comprises two masses m<1>, m<2> on an elastic rod or rods S, and a microphone j, the leads of which pass out of the casing A through a stuffing-box K. A modified form is described in which the oscillating structure is a tuning fork having its stem connected to the diaphragm and a microphone mounted between the prongs. An electro-magnetic form of receiver is described, the construction of which is similar to the electro-magnetic transmitter described in the parent Specification. The invention may be applied to non-circular diaphragms.
