Abstract

Subaqueous audible signals.-When a transmitter diaphragm E is vibrated by an exciter having a frequency much higher than the fundamental frequency of the diaphragm, the latter generally vibrates in an overtone mode, with a nodal circle. According to the present invention this is prevented by stiffening the portion of the diaphragm adjacent to the nodal circle, either by an annular thickening of the diaphragm or by means of radial ribs R. The exciter consists of a divided electromagnet. the two halves of which are fixed to masses C<1>, C<2> connected by elastic rods D, forming a system having the desired natural frequency of vibration. The invention is applicable to diaphragms of square or other non-circular shape.
