Abstract

148,987. Signal Ges. May 3, 1918, [Convention date]. Subaqueous audible signals.-The exciting-device e of a transmitter acts on the diaphragm b through a reducing-lever a, which, instead of being pivoted, is constructed so as to be flexible at the point of bending c, but is otherwise rigid with respect to the frequency employed. The lever may be of single or double T cross-section, and tapered towards the high-amplitude end. The small-amplitude end may be attached to the casing g, Fig. 1, or to a heavy free mass m, Fig. 2, which remains stationary when the lever vibrates. The diaphragm may be tuned to the signal frequency, or if signalling is to be effected over a range of frequencies the natural frequency of the diaphragm is made considerably higher or lower. In the latter case the diaphragm may have a rigid central portion p, Fig. 3, oscillating like a piston, and a flexible rim, which may be stiffened by ribs i to determine its mode of vibration. The amplitude-transformation may take place in more than one stage, and mechanical or hydraulic methods of excitation may be employed.
