Description

Nov. 26, 1929. E. WILCKENs 1,737,346
SOUND TRANSMITTING APPARATUS Filed Jun@ 5o, 192e rimmed Nov. 26, 1929 PATE ERNST 'WILCEKENS, @F ,IBERLM9 GERMANY SUNIDJRANSMXTTWG- AlPi/MTU@ Application med June 30, 1928, Serial No. 389,601, and in` Germany July le, wat'.
The present invention relates to apparatus for emitting acoustical signals in gaseous vor, liquid media, and more particularly to that type in which the liquid or gaseous operating agent is supplied through a nozzle to a vibratory diaphragm tori generating the necessary uctuations in pressure by varia tion in volume.
lt is the object ot this invention to generally 30 improve on apparatus of this type, so that thesame will possess a greater ethciency and at the same time prove more economical in operation.
According, therefore, to the invention, an
35 elastic member is interposed between'the `nozzle and the sound-generating portion or diaphragm, this intermediate member being acted upon substantially under the induence et the diaphragm. The intermediate mein ber may be provided at the edge o the nozzle itself, or between the part connecting the casing and the nozzle. lt is in this connection quite immaterial whether the nozzle7 consists oit the ordinary open pipe or tube as Well known per se, or whether the same constitutes a nozzle proper of special construction.
vBy the construction referred to is accomplished in lace of the hitherto known apparatus that due to a good nozzle closurel the vsound transmitting apparatus according to the invention possesses a greater degree of eiiciency, resulting in more economical operation.
possible to employ tongues, reeds or other mechanical vibratory structures.'
The invention will n ow be described more fully with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 shows one specific form of embodiment in section, r
Figs. 2-6 being modifications.
Referring to the drawing, in which ,the same reference characters have been employed throughout for denoting the same parts, a
, represents the sound-generating diaphragm, the operating agent being adm1tted through b. c is the elastic 'intermediate member, which may consist of rubber, leather or a ln place of diaphragms it is ot course also 2 6, enables due to its elastic nature tie diaphragm or central plate thereon respecn tively to completely close on the escape ol the operating agent upon the return movement oit the diaphragnio ln the embodiment according to llig. ll, for example, the dimensions of the intermediate annular member c require to be such that the pressure acting on the surface is less than that acting on the central plate d, as otherwise, were the vibratory movement of the dia phragm c greater than that ot the diaphragm proper a, the latter would not vibrate of its own accordv lt is oi" course understood that l do not restrict myself to the enact terms ot embodiment shown, but that Various modifications may be made without departing trom the spirit oi the invention.
"W hat ll Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. ln a sound transmitting apparatus employing a duid operating agent, a diaphragm for generating the sound, a pipe for introduction ot the said operating agent, and an elastic member interposed between the said diaphragm and said pipe.
2. In a sound transmitting apparatus em- .ploying a liuid o erating agent, a diaphragm or. generating t e sound, a pipe for introduction of the said operating agent, a central .plate mounted on the said diaphragm, and
an elastic member interposed between the l said diaphragm and the said plate. i,
3. In a form of embodiment of a sound `transmittingapparatus employing a iluid o eratin agent, a diaphra for generatin t soun a plpe for intro uction of the said operating agent, and an elastic member interposed between the said diaphragm and said pipe, the said intermediate member being so chosen in relation to the said diaphragm that the pressure of the operating agent acting on the said intermediate member is less than that acting on the said diaphragm.
In testimony whereof I-have aiXed my signature.
ERNST WILCKENS.
