Be it known that '1, Guam l). SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and resident of San dose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of Gsli'fornia, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Phonogsaph-Reproducers and Records Therefor, of which the following; is a specification.
My invention relates to a phonograph repioducer aud the record theieior, and the object of my invention is to provide a phonograph repsoducer and record that will produce souudso'f greater volume and carrying power tbauthose now general use. Referring now more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates a circular u shaped sound box having a diaphragm 2 fitted in each side thereof in the manner usual in the construction of such devices. A vibratin stem 3 is connected at one end to each diaphragm by means of a threaded pin 3* securely fastened to said diaphragm and passing through the end of said stem and held securely to said stem by nuts 3 screwed onto in 3, one on each side of said stem e other end of stem 3 is fitted with desired. The lowermost portion of stem u upon simultaneously and a socket 4 adapted to receive needle 5 which is held in position by set screw 6. Plate 12 is hollowed out on each side from a point below the center thereof to the outer circumferenceas shown at 13. At 14 is provided an opening in the upper surface of sound box 1 to which attached sound conveyor 15. A second and smaller tube 16 is connected. to the lower end of conveyor as indicated at 1'1, or directly to any point on the circumference of sound box. 1 as indicated in dotted lines at At 19 I have shown a double cut disk'i ecord adapted to be operated upon simultaneously by needles 5-5. Each of the two grooves 20 is an exact, but reversed counterpart of the other, consequently when the device in operation the two diaphragms 2 are acted the same vibration but in opposite directions.

The volume of sound emitted by a double reproducer of this kind is practically. double that of the single reproducer and therefore is desirable for use in large halls for concerts, entertainments, etc. In order to increase the carrying qualities of said augmented sounds air under pressure and in desired quantities is forced through tube 16 into sound box 1 or sound conveyor 15 from. any suitable source of supply as receive exactly lild lllll with a record having scribed and indicated at'16, the quantity being governed by the pressure applied thereto and by valve 21.
The two nuts 3 permit a very accurate adjustment of stem 3 so as to provide the proper tension of diaphragm 2 and the precise positioning of needles 5. The device hereinbefore described is designed for'use grooves provided with a laterally undulatory surface, but it is understood that changes may be made to adapt the invention for use on a record provided with grooves having a vertically undulatory surface.
In operating my improved phonograph, if one of grooves 20 is imperfect in any respect or at any point or points, and as a consequence one of said diaphragms 2 transmits animperfectvibration and as a result an imperfect sound wave reaches sound conveyer 15, then this Wave is met by a perfect Wave transmitted by the opposite diaphragm and a more perfect charged-from conveyor -15, since a perfect Wave from one diaphragm would naturally render an imperfect o'vave from the other diaphragm less noticeable. As a result of this dual construction an even, smooth succession of sounds of great volume are discharged by sound conveyor 15.
It is my desire to cover broadly a double sound box and record of the' character deeithcr a single or double sound box provided with an air inlet as described, therefore I do not Wish to confine myself to the specific mechanism herein shown and described but to make such alterations and changes in form, construction and operation as may be necessary to meet exigencies of practical application and manufacture and Within the scope of the aplpendefil clainilsi e ma e int c For instance, plate 13 may form indicated in dotted lines at 22 and may form a part of sound plate 10, or the diaphragms 2 may be placed parallel to each other as indicated in Fig. 5 in which the circular sound box is indicated by 1.

In a phonograph, the combination with a record having a pair of reversed duplicate sound record groove s formed therein, of a reproducer provided with a pair of opposed cooperating diaphragms each dia phragm having a stylus operativcly attached thereto, and each stylus being independently mounted on said reproducer and adapted to operate in one of said grooves.
