Subaqueous audible signals.-Coils attached to the oscillating parts of electro-magnetic transmitters and receivers are liable, owing to the comparative looseness of their structure, to introduce excessive damping and an indeterminate inertia effect. Various expedients are adopted to avoid this difficulty. The coils may be Bakelized in grooves or slots, as shown in Fig. 1, so as to be rigid with their supports; or they may be carried by weak springs between washers of soft material, or attached to the vibrating structure at a nodal line, so as not to partake of the vibratory movement. An arrangement of the last kind is shown in Fig. 3, in which the diaphragm 1 is formed with a profile as shown at 14 so as to vibrate with a node circle at 15, where the supports for the coil 5 are attached.
