Abstract

Subaqueous sound signals.-The two masses 1, 2, Fig. 1, constituting an oscillatory structure as in the parent Specification are connected by a rod 5 and a returning-tube 7. The mass 1 is of laminated iron and is enclosed in a non-magnetic holder 3. The mass 2, also laminated, constitutes an electro-magnet with exciting and polarizing coils 8, 9 and is enclosed in the non-magnetic holder 4 The whole is secured to the sound-plate or diaphragm 10 and may be employed either as a transmitter or receiver according as the coils are connected to an alternating current generator or a telephonic receiver. Concentric tubes may be used instead of the rod and tube. When the apparatus is used in an horizontal position, two separate magnet systems are provided, and the exciting current in the upper one is greater than in the lower so as to compensate for the tendency to distortion due to the weight of the mass 2, 4. Fig. 3 shows apparatus used for receiving only. Between the mass 11 and the electrode 15 carried by the mass 12 are carbon granules, retained in place by soft asbestos 16. A soft diaphragm 17 shuts off the space between the masses from the exterior.
