Abstract

Soundboxes.-Comprises the use in gramophones, telephones, microphones, megaphones, motor horns and the like of one or more tuned air-chambers, such as a Helmholtz resonator, for receiving sound energy from the air or transferring sound energy to the air, interposed between the sound-emitting or receiving point and the medium, and tuned to the frequency to be transferred or to mean speech-frequency. The air chamber 1 is closed on one side by a diaphragm 2, which is excited or damped by the magnetic system 3, 4, and opens into the free medium on the other side. The air chamber may be the only resonant part of the apparatus, or it may be associated with a tuned diaphragm or the like, the pitch of the latter being preferably the same as that of the chamber. The conditions may be so adjusted that one of the resonance frequencies of the system as a whole may lie below 700 and the other above 800 oscillations, so as to give a resonance band from about 500 to 1000 or 2000 oscillations. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 2909/77, 24809/05, 7654/06, 110,759, and 148,759 and 149,324, [both in Class 118 (ii), Signals].
