Abstract

Jacks.-In ratchet jacks, the retaining-pawl 15 is mounted on the pivot 12 of the handle socket 11 and is connected to the actuating-pawl 14 by a curved plate spring 18 which bears against a pivoted arm 20. The handle 22 is retained in either of two positions relatively to the socket by a spring catch 23 and projections 26, 27. In the position shown in Fig. 1, the inner end of the handle bears against the arm 20, and, on reciprocating the handle, the pillar 5 is raised. In the position shown in Fig. 2, the handle is clear of the arm 20, and the pillar will be lowered on reciprocating the handle.
