Abstract
469,326. Handling tubing in wells. BYRON JACKSON CO. Jan. 22, 1936, No. 2069. Convention date, Sept. 16, 1935. [Class 85] Means for use in a well for raising and lowering pipes with flared upset ends comprises two hinged members 1, 2 adapted to be held together by a latch 6 so as to form a circular opening 3 to receive the pipe, the opening including a tapered seat 3a considerably below the upper surface of the device. The latch 6 is of hollow rectangular form and pivoted loosely on a pin 13 in member 1 ; a spring 25 presses the latch which is adapted to fit over a lug 10 on the member 2, while a projection 33 on the member 1 is adapted to engage the latch to relieve the hinge pin 13 of strain. The latch face engaging the lug 10 is curved concentric with the pin 13. A lug 35 on the member 1 engages a recess in the member 2 to relieve the latch of vertical stresses. A lock 15 is pivoted on a pin 16 in the latch and has a hooked end 18 adapted to engage a recess 19 in the lug 10. while a cam surface 30 gives automatic action of the lock; a spring 17 constrains the lock to operative position. Lugs 23, 28 limit opposite movements of the lock which has an operating handle 22.
